How Toenail Fungus May Be Treated

A fungal infection that affects the nail bed is referred to as toenail fungus. It affects many people worldwide, and may appear unsightly. The medical term for this condition as onychomycosis, and can cause the nails to become yellowed, thickened, and brittle. The fungi that causes this ailment lives and thrives in warm and moist environments. These environments include shower room floors, public swimming pools, and surrounding areas. Some patients find success in treating this disorder with oral or topical medications, or having laser surgery performed. If you are affected with toenail fungus, please confer with a podiatrist who can offer correct treatment options.

If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Jeffrey Lerner of Palm Beach Podiatric Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Symptoms

  • Warped or oddly shaped nails
  • Yellowish nails
  • Loose/separated nail
  • Buildup of bits and pieces of nail fragments under the nail
  • Brittle, broken, thickened nail

Treatment

If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.

Prevention

In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.

In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.

What Causes Ingrown Toenails?

Ingrown toenails happen when the edge of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin. This can lead to the area becoming swollen, tender, painful and inflamed. In some cases, the area can also become infected. There are many potential causes of ingrown toenails, including wearing shoes that are too tight, sustaining an injury to the toenail, or trimming the toenails improperly. Repetitive stress on the toenails from poor posture, partaking in certain sports, poor circulation, and having a genetic predisposition to ingrown toenails can also make them more likely to occur. If you have painful or recurrent ingrown toenails, or an ingrown toenail that is showing signs of infection, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for treatment.

Ingrown toenails can become painful if they are not treated properly. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact Dr. Jeffrey Lerner of Palm Beach Podiatric Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

Causes

  • Bacterial infections
  • Improper nail cutting such as cutting it too short or not straight across
  • Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, which causes the nail to grow back irregularly
  • Ill-fitting shoes that bunch the toes too close together
  • Genetic predisposition

Prevention

Because ingrown toenails are not something found outside of shoe-wearing cultures, going barefoot as often as possible will decrease the likeliness of developing ingrown toenails. Wearing proper fitting shoes and using proper cutting techniques will also help decrease your risk of developing ingrown toenails.

Treatment

Ingrown toenails are a very treatable foot condition. In minor cases, soaking the affected area in salt or antibacterial soaps will not only help with the ingrown nail itself, but also help prevent any infections from occurring. In more severe cases, surgery is an option. In either case, speaking to your podiatrist about this condition will help you get a better understanding of specific treatment options that are right for you.

Common Sources of Heel Pain

Heel pain, which can cause severe discomfort, usually comes from one of two sources. The first type of heel pain is usually a result of overuse. This soreness results from too much impact on the foot, which can be caused by wearing shoes with too low of a heel, wearing down of the fat pad on the heel, or from a sudden increase in activity. The other source of heel pain is usually plantar fasciitis. This is typically caused by a biomechanical issue like flat feet, and occurs when the plantar fascia, the tissue connecting the heel to the toes, becomes inflamed. The first step to dealing with heel pain is providing a cushioning for the heel, such as an orthotic, to help absorb the shock from your movements. Persistent heel pain should be checked by a podiatrist, who may recommend other treatment options, such as anti-inflammatory medications or cortisone shots.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Dr. Jeffrey Lerner of Palm Beach Podiatric Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.
