Types of Toe Pain

Experiencing painful sensations in the feet can prove to be a big annoyance and something that might hinder your normal activities. For this reason, it is important to be aware of the many different types of pain you could experience—toe pain is one important kind. Toe pain has a variety of causes. One of the most common sources of toe pain is simply wearing ill-fitting footwear that is too tight around the toes. If you notice pain, swelling, and discoloration in one particular toe, this pain may be caused by a broken toe. Alternatively, if you are experiencing pain around the toenail (particularly at the sides of the nail), it is possible that this is due to an ingrown toenail. Lastly, if you have some kind of pain around the joint of a toe, and the skin around this area has become red in color or hot in temperature, this could be caused by gout. If you are unsure what is causing your toe pain, a podiatrist can help you identify and treat the problem.

Toe pain can disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact Dr. Jeffrey Lerner of Palm Beach Podiatric Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Signs and Symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy

Neuropathy is nerve damage that can arise from varied causes. Peripheral neuropathy is damage to the peripheral nerves, and it often affects the lower extremities. It can be experienced as numbness, tingling, or sharp pains in the feet. One might have trouble maintaining their balance, muscle spasms, or muscle weakness. The affected area may feel hot. If left untreated, this condition can hinder quality of life. Those with diabetes, HIV, stroke, high blood pressure, and autoimmune diseases are among those most at risk for this affliction. Accidents, infections, or vitamin deficiencies can also lead to nerve damage. Smoking and drinking can lead to a higher incidence of peripheral neuropathy as well. Lifestyle changes, such as in diet and exercise, can slow down or reverse symptoms and the progression of such nerve damage. The earlier peripheral neuropathy is caught, the better the diagnosis. So it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist as soon as symptoms are felt.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with Dr. Jeffrey Lerner from Palm Beach Podiatric Center. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

Exercise May Help Prevent Falling

Research has indicated that aging increases the risk of falling. There are physical reasons why many people fall, and these include the inability to retain muscle strength, which may negatively affect balance. Many people shorten their gait as the aging process occurs, and their overall strength may be affected. Additionally, reaction time may gradually decrease, and vision can rapidly become worse. People who fall may experience a fear of falling, and this can cause them to limit their daily activities. They may refrain from engaging in an exercise program, and this is not encouraged. Participating in an exercise and stretching regime can help to strengthen the body, which is beneficial in preventing falling. Effective fall prevention techniques can include having regular physical and eye examinations that can update existing medications and eyeglasses, and it is helpful to install grab bars in the toilet and shower area. Falling can affect the feet, and unnecessary foot pain may occur after a fall. If you would like more information about how to protect the feet in addition to preventing falling, please consider consulting a podiatrist.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with Dr. Jeffrey Lerner from Palm Beach Podiatric Center. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Signs of Sever’s Disease

If you are the parent of a growing child, it is important to care for your child’s feet. Children can be at risk of developing certain foot conditions that can negatively impact their feet. One of the conditions that parents should be on the lookout for is Sever’s disease. This condition primarily affects children that are between 10 and 12 years of age. Sever’s disease can typically cause heel pain in a child and the condition occurs when the calcaneal apophysis becomes inflamed due to some sort of microtrauma commonly involving the Achilles tendon. There are several signs of Sever’s disease that you might be able to identify in your child. First, if your child has Sever’s disease, they might experience heightened pain when engaging in running, walking, and other weight-bearing activities. Additionally, after a period of physical activity, your child might exhibit a limp. If your child is exhibiting any of the aforementioned symptoms, contact a podiatrist for medical assistance and attention.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see Dr. Jeffrey Lerner from Palm Beach Podiatric Center. Our doctor can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.
